The butterflies

Lepidoptera (Lepidoptera) are an order of holometabolous insects whose adult form (or imago) is commonly called butterfly, whose larva is called caterpillar, and nymph chrysalis. It is one of the most widespread and widely known insect orders in the world, comprising between 155,100 and 174,233 described species (including nearly 7,000 in Europe and 5,000 in France) distributed in 136 families and 43 super-families. The oldest fossil traces of butterflies show that these winged insects already lived on the planet 201 million years ago, alongside the first dinosaurs.
